Through the incredible generosity of our donors, The Friends of the Mater have made a lasting impact on the Mater Hospital Sydney. From fully funding facilities such as the Poche Van Norton Special Care Nursery and the Pagent Family Obstetric Operating Theatre, to contributing $18.5million towards a new wing of the Mater, housing the Ritchie Family Centre for Supportive and Palliative Care and The Duncan Family Day Surgery Centre. As well as helping to fund new facilities, your support also allows the Foundation to run an annual grant program, which provides funding for innovative cancer and orthopaedic research, equipment and salary support for clinicians.

Powering Possibilities
The opening of the Mater’s new clinical wing marks a significant milestone in the hospital’s history. Made possible through the generosity of our donors, including an $18.5 million contribution from the Friends of the Mater, this purpose-built space together a dedicated Supportive & Palliative Care Unit and state-of-the-art Day Surgery Centre, enhancing both compassionate, end-of-life care and contemporary surgical services. Together, these facilities reflect the Mater’s commitment to caring for patients at every stage of life continuing the shared vision of the Sisters of Mercy & Charity. Current Projects
The most recent project included the development of a new palliative care unit and a day surgery centre. These new state-of-the art facililies enhance patient care and have fulfilled the Mater’s misison to provide patient centre care across all stages of life. Construction of the new facilities commenced in December 2022 and should be Opened in January, 2026. The Foundation has contributed $18.5 million for this project, funding nearly half the total cost of the new wing.
Future Projects
Our next project is secure funding for a complete refurbishment of the Mater’s post-natal ward to ensure that it meets the needs of modern families. The journey to parenthood is not merely a medical event, but a profound life transition for the whole family. Our vision for Mater Maternity is one where every family who comes to the hospital for the birth of their child feels empowered, valued and cared for.
Maternity care at the Mater Hospital
Maternity is the heart of the Mater Hospital,Sydney and it is renowned for its gold-standard maternity care, welcoming over 2,000 babies into the world each year. Originally opened as a hospital for women and children in 1906, the Mater has a long-standing tradition of celebrating new life with compassionate care.
Cancer Care
The Mater boasts a team of Australia’s top cancer specialists and dedicated, professional cancer nurses. Offering a comprehensive range of surgical and medical cancer services, the hospital is renowned for its leadership in patient centred care, cancer research and clinical trials.
Orthopaedic Support
The Mater offers a high standard of personalised care throughout patients’ entire joint replacement journey. It is the only Australian member of the International Society of Orthopaedic Centres (ISOC), an elite group of globally-recognised orthopaedic hospitals. The Foundation has assisted the Mater’s orthopaedic surgeons in their research endeavours by providing funding for research projects and salary support for researchers. This funding has enabled them to make a significant contribution to the evidence base of orthopaedics, building the reputation of the Mater Hospital, Sydney as a leader in the field of orthopaedic surgery.
